Solar Sailing
These days, solar panels appear on everything from buildings to backpacks. They can also power a boat, we found out this week. A Swiss-made solar-powered catamaran, named sun21, made its way into New York City, ending its five-month journey across the Atlantic Ocean.
An Associated Press article stated:
The 46-foot boat produced 2,000 kilowatt hours of solar energy during its voyage, the transatlantic21 group behind the effort said in a statement. The group said this showed the crossing could be made entirely without fuel.
Upon the crew’s arrival in New York, the project website reported that skipper Michael Thonney said, "I don't particularly like speeches but I would like to shout out to the world - use solar energy!"
The boat’s arrival ceremony was on Tuesday. It’s like it’s Fleet Week…for all of us eco nerds!
