The Bush-Pombo Combo

It won’t come as a surprise to many that President Bush is campaigning in cahoots with everyone’s favorite state representative-cum-environmental hooligan, Richard Pombo of California (R-Tracy). We learned yesterday from a piece in the Tracy Press that President Bush will attend a $250-a-head fundraising breakfast for Pombo and another California state representative, John Doolittle (R-Rocklin).

The president isn’t the only one helping Pombo out:

Oil and gas companies have been major donors to Pombo this campaign cycle, and as House Resources Committee chair, Pombo pushed for oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

What are Pombo’s prospects? It was previously thought that as an incumbent, he was almost guaranteed reelection. But according to a recent poll, it’s not a sure thing. Only 46 percent of those polled said they would vote for Pombo, and 6 percent were undecided. But the Pombo camp isn’t buying it. Our favorite quote in the Tracy Press article: “‘They’re either polling in fantasy land or in Berkeley,’ said Pombo campaign manager Carl Fogliani.”

Fogliani is clearly confused, since every hippie worth his patchouli knows that Berkeley is fantasy land. Duh.
