Science as Art

Creating captivating yet informative scientific images might be a challenge most of us would shy away from, but the winners of a recent contest tackled the feat. Science Magazine and the National Science Foundation sponsored the fourth annual Science and Engineering Visualization Challenge. Not the sexiest name ever, but the environmentally inspired submissions are definitely worth checking out—especially the 5-minute movie based on satellite imagery of shrinking sea ice, the portrait of the Cuban banana cockroach, and the audiovisual tool that allows viewers to hear and see a variety of animal sounds in real time.
