Climb Your Way to Safety

Do you like to live on the edge? Laugh in the face of danger? Throw caution to the wind?

Then indoor rock climbing is probably not for you. We are truly sorry to burst the bubbles of any indoor rock climbers who consider themselves bona fide badasses, but according to a study in the current issue of the journal Wilderness and Environmental Medicine, the sport is perfectly safe.

Researchers evaluated injury risk at the 2005 World Championships in Rock Climbing in Munich, where 500 athletes from 55 different countries competed. At the end of the competition, only four significant injuries had occurred. “Overall, indoor rock climbing has a low injury risk and very good safety profile in high-level competition,” reads the study’s conclusion.

If scaling a vertical wall is really this mundane, we’d hate to see what the researchers have to say about bowling.
