British government creates carbon calculator

From AP

LONDON (AP) - Green-thinking Britons can now gauge the environmental impact of their lifestyle using an official online carbon dioxide calculator launched Wednesday.

Britain's environmental authority is inviting people to enter the details of their heating bills, air travel, and car mileage to work out their share of the estimated 554 million metric tons (610 million tons) of carbon dioxide produced by the country annually.

The government says that about 40 percent of those emissions can be traced directly to individuals.

While a variety of online carbon dioxide calculators already exist, Britain's environment secretary, David Miliband, said the use of official government data _ and open source software _ would make it more accurate and more accessible.
