Tech: On the Drawing Board

By Jessica A Knoblauch

Catching waves may soon be more than a favorite pastime for surfers. BioWAVE, an underwater machine that mimics the swaying motion of sea plants, captures power from waves and converts it to clean energy. The technology company BioPower Systems will launch pilot programs for both BioWAVE and BioSTREAM—a tidal power conversion system—off Australia within the next year. These projects are expected to generate enough power for up to 500 homes. If all goes according to plan, the first commercial systems could hit the water in 2010.
