It’s safe to assume that many people who watched March of the Penguins considered converting their ice boxes into arctic penguin playpens, if only for a delirious, glazed-eye second. Well, Oceana can bring lovers of penguins, whales, and polar bears one step closer to the ocean-dwelling objects of their affection. Although the not-for-profit organization has yet to start doling out sea creatures, its holiday offering, “Eat a Cookie, Save the Oceans,” lets supporters virtually adopt animals. And in lieu of, say, a polar bear cub, donors receive facts about the ocean, a sugar cookie recipe, and cookie cutters shaped in the variety of wildlife that Oceana protects. The relationship with your new pet may require some imagination, but there’s nothing intangible about oceanic preservation or, thankfully, cookies. Start the process at ocean.org/adopt.
