Tom Green goes green, Whale Wars, and Obama’s eco-plans
Appropriately named comedian Tom Green debuted a new quiz show, Go For the Green, on Discovery’s Planet Green Channel last Saturday night. The oddball hosts 50 contestants in front of a live audience in three frenetic rounds on this green-oriented Q&A session. Test your own eco-mettle with an online version, and study the facts and figures with the informative “Green Your Brain” website.
Talk about odd: With dozens of channels on the satellite Dish network, it seems wrong that it’s necessary to purchase the top-flight package of basic programming to view the 24/7 green channel. It should be in the Top 100. With Robert Redford’s Sundance more accessible, catch its block of environmental shows, such as Big Ideas for a Small Planet and the fourth season of Iconoclasts featuring green-tinted folks like Sir Richard Branson, Cameron Diaz and eco-fashion designer Stella McCartney.
Other channels playing eco-series include the Fine Living Network’s It’s Easy Being Green and Science Channel’s Eco-Tech, a series focused on inspiring high-tech solutions for global warming. Another hot new show includes the laudable Whale Wars on Animal Planet highlighting Sea Shepherd Society’s battle with Japanese whalers. Remember the confrontation last year with Heroes’ actress Hayden Panettiere on behalf of Capt. Paul Watson’s fight? Move over Deadliest Catch. Tune in Friday nights for eco-drama on the high seas.
During Barack Obama’s first press conference last week as president-elect, “a major issue…that’s generated lots of interest” was brought up by a reporter -- the search for a White House dog for his daughters. Considerations include a hypoallergenic pooch and a shelter pup. Will it be a goldendoodle (a poodle and golden retriever “mutt, like me”) or perhaps two different canines, as rumored on the Rachel Maddow Show? Either way, it’s good to know one of the first decisions in the transition plan is a different kind of “rescue” package.
Edward Norton and his film production company just revealed it’s been documenting Obama’s life since 2006, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the campaign. It’s been kept under wraps until after the election to not play into the “Barackstar’s” celebrity status. HBO bought the documentary and could start running it during the first 100 days of his Obama’s presidency, when he is poised to sign Executive Orders reversing Bush’s plan to “drill, baby, drill” on 360,000 acres of Utah’s sensitive public lands.
