The 2nd annual NBC “Green Week,” EMA Awards, and Quantum of Solace
It’s “Green Week” again at NBC and cable-affiliated networks like CNBC and Bravo. Even The Weather Channel is airing special Forecast Earth reports. Starting with Sunday’s football game, the network will devote 150 hours of eco-themed programming in conjunction with its “Green is Universal” policy. Despite the greenwashing criticism of last year’s effort, it’s good to see this idea wasn’t a one-off and the reprise may not include scripts quite as corny as those in 2007 -- though the Lipstick Jungle gals are headed to a green resort.
“Green Your Routine” tips by celebs run during breaks, featuring cast members like Jane Krakoswki and Jack Brayer of 30 Rock, John Krasinski of The Office, Masi Oka and Zachary Quinto of Heroes, newscasters Ann Curry and Meredith Viera as well as Tori Spelling, Tiki Barber, and Debra Messing. The campaign reminds viewers of the usual tips—walk to work, pay bills online, and shop with reusable bags—and also offers practical ways to “make a difference and save the planet.”
The Today Show “Goes to the Ends of the Earth,” Life investigates disappearing bees, and Tim Gunn’s fashion sense displays green style. Check out the lineup of special programming and links to stuff like Green Horoscopes. No kidding.
Last Saturday night Hollywood’s Environmental Media Association (EMA) gave kudos to the greenest of them all in TV and movies at the 18th Annual EMA Awards gala. Julia Louis-Dreyfus showed off her socially responsible diamond-studded bling. Eco-friendly Keenan Ivory Wayans, Emily Deschanel, and dancing star/former N’Sync-er Lance Bass showed up to honor notable nominees from The Simpsons to The Office, as well as documentaries and children’s programming. An “Ongoing Commitment Award” went to the Philadelphia Eagles for a 30 percent reduction in energy consumption since “going green” five years ago. Actress Rosario Dawson won the “Futures” award.
The box office majorly scored this weekend with the latest 007 thriller. In Quantum of Solace, Daniel Craig’s James Bond chases a faux eco-entrepreneur Dominic Greene played by Mathieu Amalric. Owner of a high-tech, luxe green hotel in Chile, the villain greenwashes through nefarious schemes. It’s great that the flick incorporated an eco theme, but apparently its writers weren’t big on subtly: Did the bad guy really have to be named Greene?
