Celebs rock the vote and campaign for Obama

What will we do with all our time and energy now that this historic election ends this week? Maybe take Michael Moore’s suggestion from his new book, Mikes’ Election Guide 2008, and campaign to make 11/4 a national holiday? In an effort to attain a record turnout on Election Day, Moore offered his movie, Slacker Uprising, as a free download. A recognized selection at the Toronto Film Festival, this documentary focuses on those who didn’t bother voting in 2004.

The effort to get folks to vote is supported by an entire constellation of stars, A new batch of spots joined the “Declare Yourself” PSA campaign, with Tom Cruise, Will Smith, Justin Timberlake, Snoop Dogg, Colin Farrell, Ben Stiller, Scarlett Johansson, Shia LeBeouf, Tobey Maguire, and green activists like Cameron Diaz, Harrison Ford and Julia Roberts making appearances in the web-based ads. Sacha Baron Cohen as Borat said: “What you do inside a voting booth is a secret!” Produced and directed by Leonardo DiCaprio, the effort helped get hundreds of thousands of people to register to vote.

The Gap ran a great eco-centric spot for the elections with Kristen Bell on behalf of “all the rivers and the bees, all the icebergs and the trees, the coral reefs, cows and pigs…speak up for all those who can’t talk. Vote!”

Dancing with the Stars contestant Brook Burke  knows the power of voting, so she sashayed to a “Rock the Vote” rally last week, stating: “It makes a difference when registered voters do not vote." The event was sponsored by Reality Cares, a volunteer organization of reality TV cast members and executives involved in a variety of causes. Now it’s The Moment of Truth for the Survivor of this Amazing Race.

As Matt Damon stumped in Florida for Barack Obama (along with The Clintons and Al Gore), his buddy Ben Affleck hosted SNL last weekend where John McCain shared the stage with Tina Fey’s Sarah Palin. Palin got “punk’d” bad by Montreal radio dudes, The Masked Avengers, posing as France’s President Sarkozy for an outrageous chat about hunting and foreign affairs. Meanwhile, Obama told Larry King that the environment is the #2 issue he’ll deal with when elected to office. The economic crisis is the first priority, he explained, but other issues, including education and health care, must also be handled immediately.
