Gold Trumps Endangered Trout and Salmon in California

Governor Schwarzenegger last week vetoed a bill that would have offered greater protection to endangered trout and salmon in California while limiting gold mining operations in ecologically sensitive habitat. According to the conservation group California Trout, the law "focused specifically on the suction dredging used by gold miners ... because it is one major factor known to disturb the sensitive habitat of vulnerable fish species."

Luckily, Schwarzenegger's enviro record isn't all bad. He did sign a bill last week that bans lead bullets in certain areas of that state, a law which could ensure the long-term survival of the California Condor. The NRA had lobbied against the bill.
