New Island Home Equals Hope for the Gilbert's Potoroo

Australia's most endangered mammal is getting a second chance. Two more rare Gilbert's potoroos have been relocated from the mainland to Bald Island, where they will join seven other potoroos as the Department of Environment's Save our Species Project seeks to create a second wild population of the species. There are only an estimated 30-40 Gilbert's potoroo in the wild. Believed to be extinct until the species was rediscovered in 1994, attempts to breed the potoroo in captivity have failed, so created a second wild population is essential to its long-term survival.
