A Campaign to Save the World's Most Endangered Birds

189 bird species are considered "critically endangered." This Friday, conservation group BirdLife International launches a five-year, £19 million campaign to help save them from extinction.

BirdLife's Species Champions initiative will try to find organizations and individuals to serve as "Champions" for each species. The Champions would provide critical funding and help "carry out the conservation work necessary to prevent an otherwise certain extinction."

Species on the list include the Bengal Florican, Philippine Eagle, Black Stilt, and several species of ibis and vulture. (Complete list.) Some of these birds are down to just a few dozen individuals, and others are already considered "possibly extinct."
