Vancouver Island Marmot Starts Climb from Extinction

A successful breeding program has nearly tripled the number of endangered Vancouver Island marmots in just four years. But hold your applause: even with 15 new litters so far in 2007, the Vancouver Island marmot -- Canada's most endangered mammal -- still numbers at just around 250 total animals in the wild and in captivity.

But as they say, every little bit helps. The Marmot Recovery Foundation plans seven releases of captive-bred marmots back into the wild starting next month.
