Monkey Theft Kills Chance for Breeding Program
The theft of a critically endangered male pied tamarin from a zoo in Brazil effectively puts an end to a years-long attempt to start a captive breeding program. Very few of the monkeys exist in the wild, where urban growth has destroyed much of the species' habitat, and fewer are left in captivity. The Bauru zoo had been seeking a female pied tamarin to breed with its lost male and start a new population.
