Magnolias: Bloom or Doom?

Walk into any garden center or greenhouse and you're likely to find the ever-present magnolia, one of the world's most popular flowers. But you might not find as great a variety of magnolias as you'd think -- it turns out that only 15 or so magnolia species are commercially cultivated. Another 230 are known in the wild... well, for now.

According to a new report from Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) and Fauna & Flora International (FFI), more than 50% of known magnolia species -- 131 of 245 species -- are in danger of extinction.

Although the ever-present press releases don't place any particular factor to blame for this extinction risk, the accompanying report does include detailed recommendations on how to go about preserving some of the endangered magnolia species.
