Chinese economic growth puts merbau tree at risk of extinction

With prices of merbau logs soaring to more than $600 per cubic meter, the rare tree could soon face extinction as cash-flush China imports the luxury hardwood at a record pace. Most of the 2 million cubic feet of merbau logs imported to China in 2006 were smuggled, according to Greenpeace.
