Rare butterflies vs. off-roaders

Six square miles of dunes at Nevada's Sand Mountain Recreation Area have been closed to off-road vehicles (such as motorcycles, dune buggies and ATVs) to help protect the only known habitat of the Sand Mountain blue butterfly. While not officially labeled as an endangered species, a ruling on the butterfly's conservation status could come as early as next month, according to the Fish and Wildlife Service.

This move by the Bureau of Land Management attempts to balance conservation of the species with recreation, according to a BLM spokesperson.
