Perlemoen protection pending

Abalone, also known as perlemoen, gains much-needed protection when it will be added to the CITES list of protected species this May. Exports from South Africa and the few other countries where abalone trade remains legal will now need to be accompanied by documentation proving it was legally harvested.

According to this must-read report from South Africa's Independent Online, more than 1 million abalone were confiscated from smugglers in 2006, and numerous additional arrests have already been made in 2007.
