1,000 organutans dead in forest fire

The Independent reports: "At least 1,000 orang-utans have been killed in fierce forest fires in Indonesia, hastening the species' headlong rush to extinction within the next decade."

Some conservationists feel the fires may have been deliberately set so the land could be re-used to grow palm oil, ironically an environmentally friendly fuel.
