Joan Jett promotes a meat-free diet

There's a long tradition of musicians being vegetarian and vegan. Hey, their job description demands that they be lean, so being veg can only help maintain that ideal weight.

The latest rocker to join the vegetarian fray is Joan Jett, who just recorded a PSA for PETA focusing on the environmental benefits (as well as mentioning benefits to animals and your own health) from cutting out meat from your diet.

"Factory farming is one of the biggest contributors to serious environmental problems. The meat industry causes more greenhouse gas emissions than all the cars, trucks, planes, and ships in the world,” Jett says in her PSA.

That's a good tack to take, as opposed to the still-controversial "for the animals" argument. After all, everyone is finally coming around to admit that greenhouse gas emissions are a problem, and the more ways we can combat it, the better.

Joining Ms. Jett in musically saying no to meat are Chryssie Hynde, Prince, Paul McCartney, Russell Simmons, Joaquin Phoenix, Carrie Underwood, the guys in AFI—so many, really, that they could form supergroups and fill up several volumes of compilation benefit albums, using a different supergroup on each track.

Perhaps this ambitious project could be produced from biodegradable materials, like the CD Corey Feldman and his band Truth Movement just recorded. The album used recycled paper, soy ink, and a corn-plastic tray. The CD features an environmental-themed song, "Green is the Colour” which is probably…just great, right? You would probably never want this CD to really biodegrade, I'm thinking. That is, unless you think the following lyrics are a bit heavy on the cheese factor: "Selfishly/industry's growing consuming our needs…Violently raping the forests mountains and seas…Technology wins at Mother Nature's demise /Please go green, green, green… Before we demolish the last purity/ Just go green, green, green…Emissions of carbon and toxic drilling/ We need green, we need green, we need greeeeeeeeeen."

Ahem. Well! A green supergroup idea could still be quite viable, maybe with a different songwriter and singer than used in the song above. Quincy Jones, take note.

I've always thought that “I Love Rock and Roll” singer Joan kicked ass, so I took greater interest in this vid. Here's how her message ends: "So what are you waiting for? Kick the meat habit and see how it rocks your world—I'm Joan Jett, and I'm a vegetarian." Love the political-style endorsement at the end—how appropo given tomorrow’s big election.
